Dental Implant Surgery Recovery Timeline By Dr. Everett Heringer on February 12, 2019

Graphic of upper jaw with dental implant near side molar Dental implants are the most effective solution for tooth loss. The implants replace your lost tooth roots, prevent jawbone recession, restore oral function and improve the appearance of your smile.

At Heringer Dentistry in Bismarck, ND, Dr. Everett Heringer offers dental implants. Read this dental implant surgery recovery timeline to help you prepare for the procedure.

Dental Implant Procedure Overview

Dr. Heringer will determine if you are in good oral health and if dental implants are the right solution for your needs. Having adequate jawbone density is one requirement for this procedure.

Dr. Heringer works with an oral surgeon so you receive the best possible care. During the procedure, one or more titanium screws will be placed in your jaw. The incision will then be closed and you will be allowed to return home (with the aid of a driver) shortly after.

Before undergoing dental implant surgery, plan ahead and stock up on supplies for your recovery. Having soft foods, drinks, clean linen, loose clothing, and medications stored before returning home will allow you to relax more easily.

The Short-term Recovery Period

The short-term recovery period last about a week or two.

Swelling and discomfort should be expected during this time. These should be manageable with the use of pain medication and the use of cold compresses applied to the face. If you experience high levels of discomfort, call Dr. Heringer.

Dr. Heringer will provide you with specific recovery details. But in general, care should be taken to avoid the dental implant surgical sites, both when eating and brushing.

Soft foods should be eaten exclusively during the first week, and patients should only resume a normal diet after consulting with Dr. Heringer.

It is important to maintain your normal oral hygiene routine, including brushing twice a day and flossing daily. However, be very gentle around the surgical sites.

You may also rinse with a saltwater solution starting the day after surgery.

The Long-term Recovery Timeline

Your total recovery time will take between three to six months. During this time, your implant will form a permanent bond with the surrounding bone tissue through a natural process called osseointegration.

When your mouth has fully healed, the oral surgeon will place an abutment on the dental implant. The abutment will be used to connect the dental implant to your prosthetic tooth or teeth.

After the placement of the abutment, it generally takes an additional two weeks to one month for the gums to recover.

Once the tissue around the abutment has healed, your custom crown, bridge, or denture will be attached.

Take the Next Step Toward Transforming Your Smile

While the recovery timeline for dental implants can seem long, the benefits last a lifetime. Dental implants restore oral function and can go a long way toward boosting your confidence.
