DR. EVERETT HERINGER: Another very important area in our practice is basically the health of the teeth. I always tell people there's two ways they lose their teeth. Number one, the teeth themselves begin to deteriorate and break down. That can be taken care of through crowns or restorations. But the other important way that people lose their teeth is because of their gum health or their periodontal condition. So our hygiene department is very focused and very passionate about helping our patients keep and preserve their teeth. Even after they have a mouthful of restorations, that's very important for them to help them maintain the health of the gums and the teeth.

We do it a number of ways in our office. We do it through regular, standard routine cleaning appointments. The other way we do it is we have diode [phonetic] laser in our practice. And what the diode laser does, we're doing periodontal services and we're doing periodontal surgeries without any anesthesia, without even the use of the scalpel again. The diode laser is just an incredible adjunct to our hygiene practice. We're doing routine cleanings, we'll get rid of bacteria, we'll get rid of any excess granulation tissue or scar tissue around the gums or any infection around the gums. We'll a lot of times go in there and clean those areas out on just routine visits with our diode lasers.

So laser dentistry, laser hygiene I really believe is going to be the wave of the future. And again, there's just a very handful of dentists or laser offices or offices in the nation that offer any sort of laser hygiene or any diode laser hygiene. But I really believe it's here and it's just a tremendous service. The cost is very, very cost effective.

And what's very important with that is that you're really being proactive. You're not letting the condition deteriorate to where they need to be seen by a surgeon. They're basically doing a lot of surgical procedures in your office early and you're doing it preventatively and you're doing it comfortable and often time we do it without anesthesia. And so it's a win-win for everybody.
