MALE VOICE: A smile says a lot about a person. Unfortunately some people aren't willing to smile because what others will see. But getting straight and white teeth doesn't have to mean surgery anymore. Health Reporter Joanna Small takes us through a smile analysis, which is the first step to a possible solution.

JOANNA SMALL: You probably get a pretty good look at your grill every time you brush. But seeing it super sized gives you a whole new perspective on your built in set of cutlery.

FEMALE VOICE: Hold your tongue back and just give me a big, big smile.

MS. SMALL: Dr. Edward Heringer and his associates put my teeth under the lens, the camera lens. This is a smile analysis, an in-depth look at my teeth, lips and gums for the purpose of determining how to improve them.

DR. EDWARD HERINGER: Now if there's any asymmetry in the front two teeth, the eye just fights and they're totally distracted.

MS. SMALL: After a photo op and x-rays comes the big stretch but no pain, no gain.

FEMALE VOICE: I don't have to use these; I can use some child ones on you probably.

MS. SMALL: My teeth are snapped at all angles and molds are made of both my tops and bottoms. Then we take a look at the cold, hard facts by studying my mouth in repose, half smile and all out grin.

DR. HERINGER: I notice even in you we're going to show you, Joanna, your buck and quarter is sticking out a little bit in the back there.

MS. SMALL: Dr. Heringer says the teeth farthest back should be the least visible. So a laser could shave down my more dominant pearly whites.

DR. HERINGER: These little Vs in between the teeth are called embrasures, the older the tooth, the flatter the teeth are.

MS. SMALL: My smile should be age appropriate so where my teeth are square, Dr. Heringer suggests a subtle rounding. And where they're chalky he suggests a simple buffing. Then there's the bottom.

DR. HERINGER: This is kind of roller coasty.

MS. SMALL: But that's fixable, too, thanks to the laser. No big changes today, though, just a close look at some big teeth that could be better.

DR. HERINGER: You have a nice smile. There's some nice things you can do to enhance it.

MS. SMALL: Other than just laugh. For NBC North Dakota News, I'm Joanna Small.

MALE VOICE: Dr. Heringer says Joanna also has some common imperfections in her two front teeth, which can easily be repaired by filling the indents and evening out her gum line with the laser. Tomorrow we'll meet a woman who's seen tremendous success with that.
